Sports injuries affect over 2.6 million children each year. Don’t let it be yours!
While getting to play sports can be an exciting time for any child or teen, there are also some things parents need to do to make sure their little one stays safe on the field. Any sport, but particularly contact sports like basketball or football can increase your child’s risk of injury. From the office of your Cincinnati, OH pediatricians, find out what you can do to keep your child safe while in the heat of the game.
Always Wear Protectie Gear
Before your child even starts practicing for their chosen sport, it’s important that they have the right equipment to keep them safe. This includes things like helmets, pads and mouthguards. And if your child needs to wear glasses while playing sports make sure their lenses are shatterproof to prevent potential eye injuries from shattered or broken glasses.
Play it Safe
It’s easy to get into the excitement of the game, but your child should still follow the rules at all times to prevent dangerous injuries. Body checking and other rule-breaking activities can also increase chances of head and spine injuries. Make sure they listen to their coach at all times and that they understand all the rules before hitting the field.
Get a Physical Exam
Before your child ever suits up, it’s important that they visit their Cincinnati children’s doctor beforehand to make sure they are healthy enough for physical activity. This means getting a physical examination several weeks before the start of the season. The sooner you can schedule this exam before school starts the better (especially since many schools require it!).
Warm-Up First
Don’t let your little athlete run right out onto the field or court without first stretching and warming up those muscles. By performing dynamic stretching and light cardio your child’s muscles will be less prone to injury.
These are only some things you can do to ensure that your child experiences a fun and injury-free sporting season. Of course, we can also provide you with more information when you come in. Don’t hesitate to give Mid-City Pediatrics Inc. a call today and turn to our Cincinnati, OH sports medicine experts who are ready to answer all your questions.
