Your Cincinnati, Ohio pediatricians are well versed in anything related to your child’s health. By having regular wellness visits, you can help protect their health and to diagnose issues they’re having before they get out of hand. Dr. Camille Graham and Dr. Gregg Kottyan from Mid-City Pediatrics in West Chester and Cincinnati, OH are experienced in all health issues related to children including ADHD.
Diagnosing ADHD
Your child's doctor can initiate an evaluation for any child from the age of 4 to 18 years of age who exhibits behavioral and/or symptoms of impulsivity or hyperactivity. Dr. Graham and Dr. Kottyan can use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to make a diagnose. They must document that the child being diagnosed has difficulties in more than just 1 setting. They also should include reports from parents, teachers or other health professionals in the diagnosis report. They will look for other conditions that may exist with ADHD including and not limiting to developmental learning issues, language problems, physical conditions or anxiety.
After a diagnosis, pediatrics in Cincinnati, Ohio such as Dr. Graham and Dr. Kottyan from Mid-City Pediatrics can offer treatment and management options to parents. Generally, oral medication is prescribed to help modify the behavioral issues. The type prescribed will depend on the age of the patient being administered it. Medication will be monitored and altered accordingly according to need. In terms of management, behavioral therapy or social skills training both have been proven to be successful with ADHD patients of all ages. The type of management techniques chosen will depend on each patient and their ADHD issues (whether behavioral, developmental or physical).

If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, you likely have some questions about the condition. Although ADD and ADHD are common terms, they are not always well understood. At Mid-City Pediatrics in Cincinnati, Ohio, we work alongside parents and patients to manage ADHD in a comfortable and appropriate way. Our pediatric staff - Dr. Camille Graham, Dr. Michael Kessel, Dr. T. Ryan Hensley, Dr. Carrie Kluger, Dr. Gregg Kottyan and nurse practitioner Laurie Graham - have addressed a few of the questions they often hear from parents about ADHD:
What is ADHD?
While all children experience energetic outbursts and impulsive behavior from time to time, a diagnosis of ADHD from our Cincinnati pediatricians may be considered if this behavior persists into a pattern of inattentiveness and hyperactivity that keeps a child from functioning at school, home or in social situations. Children who have extreme difficulty staying organized, unusually short attention spans, and cannot stay seated or "wait their turn" in the classroom may be dealing with ADHD.
Are ADD and ADHD the same thing?
This is a very common question heard from parents by our Cincinnati pediatricians. While ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder) share similar characteristics, the "H" makes all the difference between the two diagnoses. Hyperactivity, or extreme restlessness, is absent from ADD, meaning those with ADD may be very calm, but internally fight a battle to remain organized and attentive.
How can ADHD be treated?
Your Cincinnati pediatrician will evaluate your child's symptoms to develop a treatment plan that works best for him or her. This can include behavioral therapy with a trained psychologist, medication or support at school. Follow-up evaluations will help determine if the designated management plan is working or needs adjustment.
We encourage you to contact Mid-City Pediatrics at any time with questions you may have about ADHD and other childhood conditions. Call us today for a appointment!
